APPEAL TO ALUMNI

Alumni in India, please click here.

Dear Alumni,

After having tremendous success in our International Conference on Advances in Civil Engineering (ACE 2002), from January 3rd to 5th 2002, as a part of celebrating the GOLDEN Jubilee of our Institute, our Department is now organizing the second one in January 2003. This will be an International Workshop and Conference on, Construction Management and Materials (CONMAT 2003), during 9th to 11th January 2003.

The Workshop (Tutorial) of CONMAT 2003, to be held on 9th January 2003, is for the benefit of all concerned in these inter-disciplinary fields by inviting Internationally reputed experts from all over the world. The Conference part of CONMAT 2003 (10th and 11th January 2003) is proposed for delegates dealing with different aspects of Construction Management and Materials, as detailed in Themes of the Conference, given in the Call for Papers.

During ACE 2002, we had 173 Delegates from different countries of the world. Professor Surendra P. Shah, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering and Director, Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL 60208 was the Keynote Speaker. Professor Andrew J. Whittle from MIT, USA and Professor Thomas T. C. Hsu, from the University of Houston, Texas, USA were some of the Professors invited in that Conference. We would request you to please visit our web site menu, Glimpses of ACE 2002 to know more details about ACE 2002 and also to see the photographs at your leisure time. <http://www.iitkgp.ernet.in/ace2002>.

Moreover, you will be glad to know that we may get two Visiting Professors for about one year or so from the leading Universities of the USA out of those who came during the Conference. Another good news is that we have opened a separate Bank Account in the name of IIT Civil Engineering Conference (IITCEC) to promote such Conferences and to have many other academic programs including exchange of students and faculty from different countries of the world. All these could be made largely due to your co-operation and support.

As in the last Conference, we plan to bring out the Conference Proceedings containing the technical papers of the Conference, Departmental Souvenir containing some useful technical information, some nostalgia/ down the memory lane type write up, or even some creative writing etc. We also intend to publish names and other details of Civil Engineering alumni in the Souvenir. We invite you to come and be with us to share some nostalgic feelings as we got the response during ACE 2002.

The preliminary estimate for such an ambitious project works out to be around $ 60,000. We expect that our Civil Engineering alumni will again come forward to take major responsibilities to make it a grand success. The different suggestive but not exhaustive ways are given below:

  • You can publicize to all other alumni known to you for the Conference and also for the contributions.
  • You are invited to send your write up for the Special Souvenir.
  • You are requested to make a spontaneous and valuable contribution of US $100 and above (Tax exemption benefits are applicable under Charitable Donations, U.S.Federal Tax I.D. # 47 – 0747227).
  • However, a contribution of US $500 and above will give the following benefits:
    • Your name will be published in the Souvenir as GOLDEN ALUMNI.
    • You will be treated as Guest Delegate, which means that we will provide free accommodation and other hospitalities for you during the Conference.
    • You can be a registered delegate for the conference and present a paper. For the Golden Alumni, the registration fee is reduced to half of the amount mentioned in the Call for Paper.

Alumni residing in India and other countries may contact us for finding the equivalent donation amount to become Golden Alumni.

Donations made by Alumni residing in India also qualify for Income Tax exemption under Section 80 G (100%). Such contribution should be paid to the ‘Technology Foundation, IIT, Kharagpur’ (who have agreed to collect the contributions on our behalf) in the prescribed form.

We request you to send this information to as many Civil Engineering Alumni as you know.

Please remember that, this is our Department and our Institute. So, should we not work together to make it a grand success?

With best wishes,

J.N. Bandyopadhyay
