Dr. Miroslaw J. Skibniewski is a Professor
of Civil Engineering, Associate
Provost, and Interim Dean
of International Programs at Purdue
University. He holds his M.Eng. degree from Warsaw
University of Technology and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees
from Carnegie-Mellon University,
in civil engineering and project management. He has also received
a Certificate from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education
Management Development Program.
As Purdue University's Associate
Provost, Dr. Skibniewski is engaged in the matters of
planning and policy formulation, administration of university funded
research and development programs, faculty personnel policies, intellectual
property and technology transfer, and budget analysis. As Interim
Dean of International Programs, he is responsible for
institutional planning, management and administration of educational,
research and extension collaboration between Purdue University and
institutions outside of the United States. He also represents Purdue
on the Board of Directors of Midwest University Consortium for International
Activities.
As a researcher and educator, Professor
Skibniewski specializes in computer-aided decision support for the
construction industry and in construction automation. Along with
his graduate students at Purdue University, he developed one of
the first construction automation programs in the United States.
He collaborated with numerous industrial and government organizations
both in the United States and overseas. While on sabbatical leave
or away from his regular assignments at Purdue, Dr. Skibniewski
worked as a Visiting Senior Research Scientist with the Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Melbourne,
Australia, Visiting Research
Professor with the Institute for Mechanized
Construction and Rock Mining in Warsaw,
Poland, Visiting Professor
at the University of Hong Hong
and Visiting Professor at Loughborough
University in England. Prior to his academic career,
he worked as a staff engineer with the Pittsburgh
Testing Laboratory in Pennsylvania where he was in engaged
in forensic engineering and industrial safety issues.
Dr. Skibniewski serves on the National
Academy of Engineering USA-Germany Frontiers in Engineering
Committee, American Society of Engineers'
Robotics and Field Sensing, Information Technology, and Intelligent
Computing Committees, various technical committees of the Construction
Industry Institute, and on the National
Academy of Sciences Assessment Panel for construction
automation and computer integrated construction programs at the
National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is
a founding member of the Board of Directors and the immediate past
President of the International Association
for Automation and Robotics in Construction. Dr. Skibniewski
is also Editor of Automation in Construction,
an international research journal published by Elsevier Science,
and member of editorial boards of the International Journal of Continuing
Engineering Education and Lifelong Learning, Journal
of Construction Research,
Construction Management and Economics, International
Journal of Construction Management, Journal of Civil Engineering
and Management, International Journal of Advanced Technology, and
Property Management (Real
Estate Valuation and Management).
Professor Skibniewski received the National
Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award
(1986), American Society for Engineering
Education Best Paper Award (1991), American
Society of Civil Engineers' Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering
Research Prize (1998), and many grants from government and industry
for support of his research. He is listed in Who's Who in Science
and Engineering, Who's Who: American Men and Women in Science, Who's
Who Online, and in other national and international biographical
references. Dr. Skibniewski is an author or co-author of over 100
technical publications.
